Message from the President |

My First Message as President January 8, 2008 Brothers and Sisters: I hope everyone had a great holiday season. Let me start this letter by thanking our past president Jon Nordgren for his dedication to our local. His unwavering commitment and his tireless efforts have built Local #473 into what it is today. Even though he is not president, I know Jon will still be active helping to forward our cause. Again, thank you Jon. I would like take a moment to welcome our new union officers, Chad Gonwa as B Shift Steward, Ryan Koncki as C Shift Steward, and Adam Slade as 1 year Trustee. Also, welcome back Gregg Paiser as A Shift Steward. Please support these individuals in their new roles. I know many of you are wondering what the status is with our contract. The contract is currently in the hands of our attorney, along with the city’s attorney, as they prepare the final language for the arbitrator. I would caution everyone not to “speculate” about how some of the new language in the contract will be implemented. We will be having informational meetings in the near future and you will have an opportunity at that time to ask any questions you may have. There is a lot on the agenda for 2008. At the end of the month we will be sending some of the executive board members to the Advanced Leadership Training Seminar. They will be attending classes such as Duty of Fair Representation, Fighting Anti-Union Retaliation, and Strategic Planning for Union Leaders. The AFFI and the IAFF Conventions are both being held this summer. If you would like to attend or raise any issues at these conventions please let your steward know. Throughout 2008 we will be working diligently to ensure correct implementation of the new contract. As a side note, please provide your personal e-mail address to your shift steward or send me an e-mail. I think we would all agree that there is some information that should not be distributed using the departmental e-mail. In addition, there are still openings for various committees. If you are interested in signing up, please let me know. Finally, I along with V.P. Soler will be working hard with the Mayor, other leaders at City Hall, and the fire department administration to address some of the serious issues we are currently facing. It has been a privilege serving as your Vice President over the past several years and I consider it an honor to serve as your president over the next year. Fraternally, Brad Buntrock, President IAFF Local #473
